Out with the old....in with the new!

I've got that new years buzz today...wondering what the next year will bring...so many questions...so many possibilities!
....will my children eventually learn to play together without it ending in a brawl?
....will I ever sort out/ebay/carboot the growing pile of stuff that is beginning to take over my craft room?
...will there be some snow....? pleeeeease I have a sledge at the ready but we've not even had a frost yet!
The first mission this year is to get some chickens. My parents have moved in next door so between us we should be able to care for them, I keep being told how easy they are to care for but as I have never owned a pet I'm a little nervous! Any advice on which breeds to choose would be most welcome. We are looking for interesting eggs and funny feathers rather than prolific layers (daft I know!).

Anyways, gotta go dig the garden now! Hope that your new year is off to a good start too...what are your missions and plans  for the year??! x

Take Care,
Love Dotty

  1. In answer to your questions: not til their grown up, yes and probably quite soon, who knows but at least you can did the garden. Sounds like you are off to a flying start (no pun intended but do make sure you clip their wings...).

    1. oh yes wing clipping, a;though some of the daft breeds I like can't even fly properly!...and it has been quite handy to have no frost as I'm super behind with sorting the garden out and frozen ground wouldnt be quite so accomodating!

  3. best of luck with the chickens, the best advice is to make them fox proof, I have them next door and even the large run they have he has a plastic roof on so the fox cannot get in, did find a hole in my garden yesterday near the fence and think that was dug by a fox. Chickens also at the back of me and the fox has had them twice so take care and I live in Leeds which is a big city but foxes are everywhere. I love to hear the clucking away, if you have close neighbours I would think twice about a cockerel! must admit I would not mind one near me but not all neighbours are so accommodating,, best of luck I envy you.

    1. I love the noise of chickens too..they sound like gossiping old ladies to me! If we had a cockerel he'd have to live right up the back garden far far away from the houses or we may not be popular with the neighbours! Definately need to work onth fox proofing...there are a lot around here too!

  5. Sorry I don't have any advice about chickens. You are brave to live next door to your parents - ha! As for the sibling brawls, I think it's worse at certain ages than others...maybe they've just hit a rough patch. One day they will be thankful for each other. :)

    1. wise words! I know its an age thing but it feels like it going on forever at the moment...although I cant imagine them body slamming each other and chasing each other around the house at 18!...and fortunately I get on really well with my folks (and its very handy for babysitting too! ;) )Thanks for visiting!

  6. Chickens are great fun and fairly easy to look after as well! I had 6 Black Rock hens in 2008, and am now down to just 2 :(... But luckily enough, I have never had Mr Fox around here.... oh, and sorry to let you know that at 18, 'kids' do still chase and stomp after each other around the house :) Have fun with the chooks!!
